Our Level 3 Public Service Operational Delivery Officer Apprentices have been on a virtual tour of the world’s largest religious building, Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia, South East Asia.
Used for religious purposes, the temple was also the City Houses where the King, his princes and ministers would meet, which in modern times would relate to a Town Hall and the Council Leader meeting with councillors.
The apprentices that went on the virtual trip are employed as Operational Delivery Officers at Wakefield Council and work in customer-facing roles. The trip gave them the opportunity to compare the local area to an ancient city including examining the living conditions, careers that were available and how the Council could support its residents.
“The tour to Cambodia fitted in well with what we were learning about in regard to equality.”
Level 3 Public Service Operational Delivery Officer Apprentice, Ben Watson said: “The tour to Cambodia fitted in well with what we were learning about in regard to equality.”
Barnsley College Trainer Samantha Dymock commented: “Some of the apprentices have been adjusting to working from home and self-isolation. I was keen to take them on a virtual tour so they could see a different part of the world and explore a site that would enhance their knowledge but is still relatable to their qualification.
“I think it’s important to demonstrate that an ancient world heritage site is still relevant to today’s studies and society. The themes about community, employment, housing and the role the Council can play in improving the lives and conditions for its residents are still as important today as they were when the Angkor Wat Temple was built; and is particularly relevant to the apprentices working at the Council.”
