Kick start your construction career at the Construction Skills Village.

The Construction Skills Village is a collaboration between Henry Boot Construction, Northern Regeneration, Barnsley College and Barnsley Council and is suitable for anyone who is interested in starting a construction career. It will provide you with first-hand practical experience of what it is like to work on a construction build whilst giving you the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required for a successful career within the construction industry.

“The Better Barnsley redevelopment is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create an employment and skills legacy in Barnsley. The Skills Village will underpin this objective and address the skills shortage by providing demand-led training to potential future employees.” – Ryan O’Loughlin, Project Director at Henry Boot Construction.

You will work towards a Level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills on a ‘live’ site where you will gain real-life experience of working on a construction build from start to finish. You will develop your skills in a range of construction trades including, bricklaying, preparing and laying foundations for a build, guttering, plumbing, joinery, painting and decorating.

The site contains training areas where you will work on projects guided by expert tutors from the college. Henry Boot will also work closely with the college and provide students with industry-related talks and site tours where you will get the chance to take a look at the on-going work for the Better Barnsley project, including the renovation of Barnsley town centre. This will ensure that you gain theoretical knowledge together with the practical industry experience required to help prepare you for a career in construction whilst also providing local and regional businesses with a stream of highly talented individuals.

The types of projects you will be working on include building paved areas for the site and building shelters on the site, so that work can still take place in all weather conditions. Current students are working on building a smoking shelter which they have planned and organised themselves. You will also work on a range of construction activities including health and safety, block walling, fitting radiators, laying out gravel, laying out paving slabs, underground drainage, mixing and using concrete and mixing and using cement.

You will also produce a portfolio of your work which you can use to to show to prospective employers or education providers, after you have finished your course, as proof of the work you have completed.

Previous students who have completed a course at the Skills Village have progressed onto further education, apprenticeships or full-time employment within the construction field.
