Our Esports students are taking part in a vital health study to learn more about the key risk factors in College-based Esport athletes.

The study, a collaboration with Leeds Trinity University, will gather a collection of baseline health data over the next 12 months and make lifestyle suggestions to those in the Esports industry.

“We are excited to be collaborating with Barnsley College on this health study. It will help us to understand more about how Esports players behave, the impact this has on their health and how they can maximise their future performance in Esports.”

The health data included the students’ body mass index (BMI), height, body fat percentage, waist and hip circumference, blood pressure, heart rate, muscle strength, biochemical data, psychological health, quality of life and dietary data, and was collected by the students from the College’s university-level Sport courses.

The research will allow the College to understand the habits of Esport students and challenge misconceptions. It is also hoped that the findings will influence best practice across the Esport education industry.

Courtney Barham, a Physical Activity, Health and Exercise Foundation Degree student, said: “I’m thinking of working in nutrition, and this was a chance for me to collect data. I am really looking forward to being involved in the data analysis and discovering the findings.”

Nathan Dawkins, Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science at Leeds Trinity University, added: “We are excited to be collaborating with Barnsley College on this health study. It will help us to understand more about how Esports players behave, the impact this has on their health and how they can maximise their future performance in Esports.”
