Barnsley College and University Campus Barnsley students are celebrating winning two awards at the inaugural Barnsley Young Champions 2018 awards.

Business Administration Apprentice, Tommy Mansell, was crowned the winner of the Young Apprentice award, and Ellen Auckland, a Popular Music student at University Campus Barnsley won the Young Musician award.

Tommy, 17 from Hemsworth, is employed as a Level 3 Business Administration apprentice working within the Enterprise department. He started his apprenticeship last year and in that time he has revived the College’s student newspaper, The Grapevine; doubled the number of stallholders at the My Markets events and now runs monthly competitions to encourage students to get more involved.

Tommy said: “The Grapevine is something a bit extra for people to do and an outlet for whatever they want to share. It might be something which is going on in groups or it could be health and wellbeing. It is not like a newsletter, it is quite informal.

“When I started I just had a name and then I started putting ideas together. I write and collect content, design it, get it printed and then handle distribution too. We have the fourth edition coming out soon.”

Ellen, 20, from Lombard Crescent, Darfield, has been playing as part of the Barnsley Jazz Association since she was 10. Ellen is talented at playing numerous instruments including trumpet, piano and trombone and is eager to pass on her musical knowledge to the younger generation of musicians. To help new musicians, she set up her smaller band, where they could experience playing as part of a group in a smaller environment.

Ellen said: “I really enjoy teaching and I’m currently doing my degree in Popular Music at University Campus Barnsley. I want to do my PGCE and teach.”

The awards were held on Friday 13 April at the Holiday Inn, Barnsley, recognise the contribution, excellence and inspiration of young people who live, work and learn among us everyday.
