Pokémon club encourages catching friendships and battling loneliness
Posted: 19/05/2025
Two university-level Esports students have made a significant impact on wellbeing and inclusion by launching a Pokémon Club aimed at tackling loneliness and improving mental health.
Initially designed for Esports students at Barnsley College University Centre, many of whom find socialising challenging, the club has grown in popularity and now attracts students from across different courses.
The club provides a welcoming and relaxed space where students can connect over a shared interest, encouraging conversation, friendship, and a stronger sense of belonging. By using Pokémon as a common ground, these students have created an inclusive environment that breaks down social barriers and supports positive mental wellbeing.
This student-led project highlights the power of creativity, empathy, and leadership in making a real difference and stands as a great example of how small ideas can have a big impact on student wellbeing.

Joshua Ward, a BA (Hons) Esports Education: Coaching, Health and Wellbeing Top-Up student and co-organiser of the club, said: “The inspiration for our club was initially our love for Pokémon.
“At the start of the club, our goals were to create a community and to help people come out of their shells. We chose something popular to catch the interest of those who not only enjoy Pokémon but also those who may want to start a new interest.
“The club feels like a close-knit community. I hope this club has helped people know that it's okay to not be okay, and people should know that no matter their struggles, there are people who care.”
Lliam Dickinson, a Sport HE Pathway Leader at the College, added: “The student-led Pokémon club has become a vibrant hub uniting individuals from various departments to socialise and engage in friendly competition. This initiative offered a much-needed respite from academic pressures, fostering a sense of community and enhancing student well-being.”
