The Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor Steve Green, has visited Premdor in Barnsley to find out more about the College’s Premdor Academy and meet some if its students.
The Premdor Academy is a partnership between Barnsley College and Premdor, a leading UK manufacturer of timber doors. Launched in July 2018, the aim of the Academy is to develop a highly skilled, motivated and engaged future workforce and to provide students with the expertise and knowledge required to ensure they become employable within engineering and manufacturing.
The visit started with a presentation from Gavin Day, Organisational Development Manager at Premdor, who explained in further detail how the Academy will help young people in the community to develop, grow and equip them with the skills required for a successful career with Premdor.
Gavin explained further how Premdor is also working with schools and businesses to raise awareness of the engineering and manufacturing industry and to create opportunities for the people of Barnsley and the surrounding areas.
Guests also enjoyed a tour of Premdor’s facilities where The Mayor had the opportunity to speak to employees at Premdor, Barnsley College staff and current Premdor Academy students Abby Cooper and Alfie Webley.
Launched in July 2018, the Premdor Academy is based at the Barnsley College’s Science Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Centre. The College and Premdor work together to tailor the curriculum to ensure that students gain the skills that meet the business needs of Premdor.
The Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor Steve Green, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the site and learning more about the projects being developed to support apprenticeship and employment opportunities. The scale of production on the site is huge, and the company is clearly passionate about developing local skills to support their growth, which is great to see.”
Chelle Charlesworth Programme Manager for C-Stem at Barnsley College added: “Academies are an excellent way to bring education and industry together. It was a great opportunity to showcase the Premdor Academy to the Mayor and explain in further detail how it will help our students to develop their engineering skills and prepare them for the world of work.”
Gavin Day added: “We were delighted to welcome the Mayor to Premdor and share the recent successes we’ve had with the Academy. It was a pleasure to discuss our links with other local community projects and initiatives.”
