Seeds of Knowledge Grow During Industry Week

Posted: 04/02/2025

During Industry Week, our Horticulture students had the opportunity to engage in a series of hands-on workshops and experiences, gaining valuable insights into the world of horticulture, floristry, and conservation.

The week kicked off with a creative floristry workshop led by local independent florist The Potting Shed. The session focused on how to create water-based flower displays using real flowers and the techniques behind crafting the arrangements. By the end of the session, they left with their own beautiful floral arrangements, a lasting keepsake of their newfound skills and creativity!

Students also heard from Abbie Ford of the Wentworth Castle Gardens about the vital role of volunteers in preserving nature and history. She explained how volunteers help protect important sites while gaining valuable skills and experience.

The talk highlighted opportunities within the National Trust and inspired students to consider their own role in conservation efforts.

The week ended on a visit to Cannon Hall, where Head Gardener Daniel Mason offered a glimpse into the daily life of managing a historic garden. He shared insights on the responsibilities and challenges of the role, giving students a deeper understanding of horticulture. The visit ended with hands-on gardening activities, allowing students to dive into the practical side of the field.

Lucy Evans, Cultural Capital and Personal Development Coordinator within Enterprise, said: “Industry Week is an invaluable opportunity for our students to connect with professionals in the field and experience the real-life applications of their studies.

“We hope we have helped our Horticulture students gain a deeper understanding of their future career paths by learning from experts and experiencing real-life applications of their studies. This week offered inspiration and valuable skills to support them on their journey toward becoming skilled horticulturists and florists.”
