How long have you worked for Barnsley College?
I joined Barnsley College in November 2018.
Why do you think it’s important for employers to develop their workforce?
The investment creates progression opportunities and adds value to every job. This supports recruitment by making the business an attractive employer and retains employees whilst upskilling them. I could go on; there are so many reasons!
Which client accounts and sectors do you manage?
In addition to overseeing the Business Development team, I manage accounts, like Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Premdor (part of the Masonite UK Group), Ardagh Glass (part of the Ardagh Group) and XPO Logistics.
Can you give us an example of a positive impact that you have had on a client business whilst in your current role?
Last year Premdor (part of the Masonite UK Group) took their apprentices into the business when teaching was finished for the summer break. Each day they were paid a salary and provided with lunch. This showed a commitment to the apprentices and really immersed them in the business, and they got a genuine experience of being an employee. Two apprentices were employed by Premdor on completion of their qualifications and they had, in effect, already had an induction to the business.
What do you enjoy most about coming to work?
Barnsley College has a strong leadership team and a clear, shared vision. They understand the influence they have within the community and they are focused on delivering value – to our students, businesses and the region as a whole.
Give a brief summary about your career to date?
My career could have turned out so differently! I left school with aspirations to work in childcare, but there were no apprenticeships back then and I just didn’t settle into further full-time study for that. Very happily, I’ve settled into a sales career; I’ve worked in property and for a training provider in the private sector before joining Barnsley College.
