Jenny Wardle – NHS Contracts Co-ordinator

Jenny Wardle NHS Contracts Co-ordinator at Barnsley College

When did you start working at Barnsley College?

I joined Barnsley College in September 2018.

Why do you think it’s important for employers to develop their workforce?

It’s an investment in the future of the business and the wider community because it gives people an opportunity to train whilst they earn, and an alternative to full-time education. Also, it drives the progression of employees and replaces skills that are lost when people retire or leave the business.

Which client accounts and sectors do you manage?

I work with apprenticeships across all curriculum areas including quite a few NHS Trusts and organisations operating in the Health, Science and Social Care Professions. Most of my clients are larger organisations (those with a wage bill of at least £3m) who benefit from the Apprenticeship Levy.

Apprentice roles that I support employers to recruit include Healthcare Support Workers, Community Sport and Health Officers and business support functions at varying levels, like Business Administration.

Can you give me an example of a positive impact that you have had on a client business whilst in your current role?

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service require all of their new domestic staff to complete the Level 2 Cleaning and Support Services Apprenticeship. One of their students was very anxious about the maths and English modules involved and that made him quite resistant to joining the course. The tutor was really supportive and took time out to speak to him about what was involved; she built up his confidence enough that he gave it a go. The outcome was a fantastic – test scores all around 98%, a pass with flying colours and an overjoyed apprentice, tutor and employer. Moments like that make this an amazing job!

What do you enjoy most about coming to work?

The variety. I come into work and usually my schedule shifts around and I really like the unpredictable nature of it. I love the clients and getting out into the community. My colleagues in the Business Development team are a definite bonus because we work really well together, it’s a happy place to be.

Give us an interesting fact about yourself

I like nothing more than being in a yoga pose, especially in a hot room! I’m a complete fitness freak and spend a lot of my spare time in the gym.
