How long have you worked for Barnsley College?
I joined Barnsley College in August 2019.
Why do you think it’s important for employers to develop their workforce?
To upskill staff, which has positive outcomes for the business; and to benefit the community in terms of employment opportunities.
Which client accounts and sectors do you manage?
I look after some large clients who meet the criteria for the Apprenticeship Levy (having a wage bill of at least £3m). Those include Kier Group, Berneslai Homes and AmcoGiffen who each have multiple apprentices with us, studying a range of apprenticeship programmes including Team Leader/Supervisor, Construction: Design and Build Technician and Property Maintenance Operative.
Can you give me an example of a positive impact that you have had on a client business whilst in your current role?
The regular review meetings I have with clients are always really rewarding. We look at each individual apprentice to see how they are progressing. We fulfil any support needs that the apprentice may have and ensure that they are happy and working to their best potential for the employer. As a College we always ensure that we are providing the best possible learning experience and outcomes for all our students, apprentices and stakeholders.
What do you enjoy most about coming to College?
The job we do in Business Development is pretty unique in that we build relationships with apprentices (or students), the student-facing departments in College and also the outside community of employers. I love the networking element of that and seeing positive outcomes when students are successful and employers get the benefits, growth and prosperity.
Give us an interesting fact about yourself
I spent six months travelling around Australia and created some amazing memories – I’d recommend it! I completed my first half marathon last year on a cold and rainy day in Manchester. I’m really into sport and had trained hard; it was tough and I was proud to get it done.
