When did you start working at Barnsley College?
I joined the Barnsley College team in August 2019.
Why do you think it’s important for employers to develop their workforce?
Employee development is important for retaining key people in a business. Also for succession planning, bringing in fresh talent as employees leave or retire, and to avoid skills gaps. The Apprenticeship Levy presents a serious opportunity to larger employers with a salary budget of £3m or more to access apprenticeship training.
Which client accounts and sectors do you manage?
I work with Leeds Teaching Hospital, Barnsley Hospital and The Company Shop Group to name just a few. The apprenticeship roles in those accounts are a mix of Healthcare and Business and Management. Recently I have supported Barnsley Football Club to recruit Property Maintenance Operatives.
Can you give me an example of a positive impact that you have had on a client business whilst in your current role?
I’ve been working on talent mapping and developing progression routes with some larger, levy clients including Barnsley Football Club. This takes a broader view of the needs of the business, looking at the progression journey of individual apprentices and then going beyond that to influence the development and growth of the business as a whole.
What do you enjoy most about coming to work?
The work is incredibly varied and no two days are the same. I’ve always wanted to work in education, it’s fulfilling to be making a positive difference to the lives of the young people we work with.
Give us an interesting fact about yourself
I used to be a wrestler with the National Community Wrestling Alliance (NCWA)! I also did some refereeing. The experience was a lot of fun and really built-up my confidence as we had audiences of up to 300 people.
