Students get technical at local theatre

Six Barnsley College Live Events students will be carrying out work experience at The Civic Theatre, Barnsley.

Students will work at The Civic for two days each, gaining experience setting up for shows and controlling lighting and sound. The Theatre has a view to open this up as a volunteering opportunity to the students.

Technical Manager at The Civic Huw Williams first met with the group of students to talk them through the shows hosted at the theatre and show them the equipment that they use.

He said: “We’re really glad to be working with Barnsley College students. This is a great partnership which is mutually beneficial to the theatre and the college.”

Tom Flanagan, Tutor and Theatre Manager at Barnsley College, added: “It’s great to establish industry links with The Civic. It’s important for the students to gain work experience in live events and it will be exciting for them to work in another theatre as well as Barnsley College’s Electric Theatre.”

Live Events Apprentice Jamie Asquith,17, said: “This is a brilliant opportunity as we will learn new and exciting things in a real industry environment.”
