Students studying Fine Art BA (Hons) at Barnsley College got the opportunity to hear from professionals within the creative industry at an event held at The Civic.
Students heard from a fantastic panel of industry experts including the Head of Curatorial Programme at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Helen Pheby, and Associate Professor of Fine Art at York St John University, Dr Vanessa Corby.
The afternoon was an excellent way for students to learn more about the importance of working within the creative industry and the power that they could have as an artist within society.
Liz West, a Barnsley-born artist whose large-scale works have been shown in London, Berlin, Paris and Dubai, spoke to students about the importance of networking with other creative professionals, the significance of persevering even when it gets tough and discussed the prominence of the internet and social media.
Sheffield based artist, Kid Acne, was amongst the panel and said: “I’m an independent artist based in the region and felt I could make a valid contribution to the discussion today.
“It’s particularly important to speak to young adults if they’re unsure about which direction they want to go in or if they are hearing opposing views about what it is they should do with their life because it’s vital they hear it’s possible to follow their heart and what they’re passionate about.”
