Barnsley College’s Hair and Beauty and Catering department have been busy assembling a 20 foot tree with paper hands decorated with anti-bullying pledges to help raise awareness for anti-bullying month.

The Christmas tree, which is usually put up in the college’s atrium in December, was installed a week earlier to coincide with anti-bullying month in November. The department ran a two-day event for the national campaign where students across the college were able to design their own pledge hands for the tree, enjoy a selection of sweet treats made by Catering and Hospitality students and visit a reflective area where they were offered advice or support.

Hair and Beauty students have been attending cross college workshops themed around raising awareness of bullying throughout November and have all contributed with their very own decorated pledge hands with thoughtful messages. Students who volunteered to help out at the event used their knowledge on the topical subject and shared this with their peers.

Departments across the college also participated and assisted in creating more themed pledge hands to be hung on the tree with a special message of their own.

Hair and Beauty Tutorial Team Leader and organiser of the event, Jill Wilkinson, said: “My aim was to promote the anti-bullying theme as a cross college event so the idea of an anti-bullying pledge tree seemed the perfect way to involve learners and staff from all college sites. The hands look fantastic on the tree and showcase the pledges made by learners from a variety of different departments. The feedback we have had is amazing and I’m extremely proud of all the learners for getting involved, raising awareness and supporting the college ethos.”
