Students thrive at Jamie's Farm

Our Learning for Living and Work (LFLW) students enjoyed an unforgettable week at Jamie’s Farm, Monmouth, Wales, immersing themselves in a transformative farm experience that fostered personal growth and development.
Jamie’s Farm collaborates with schools and colleges to create these impactful experiences, and our students certainly made the most of it with the support of our staff.
The one week residential trip is designed to cultivate change and enhance life skills. Seven of our students who participated, engaged in a variety of activities that broadened their horizons. Their tasks included farming, wood chopping, cooking, gardening, farm maintenance, horse care and more. Additionally, students reflected on their success and behaviour, gave compliments, and showed recognition to the achievements of their peers.

One of the students, Mckenzie, said: “Our daily routine included waking up, feeding the animals, having breakfast and working on our morning jobs. I enjoyed the experience. I learned to be more careful and take care of animals.
“My favourite part was looking after the sheep. I fed and kept an eye on them. After lunch or dinner, we would chill and talk about what we did during the day. One of my memorable moments was playing hide and seek in the woods.”
Adding on the engaging experience, Ellie Hardy, said: “My favourite part was the horses. I made their food and took them on a walk. We did not have access to our phones which felt weird, but it was also nice to have a break from them. In the evening, we went on daily walks and there was a rope swing we liked as well.”
On completion of the week at the farm, the Head of Jamie’s Farm Monmouth, Jo Powell, forwarded a letter to the LFLW department filled with positive feedback on the student’s enthusiastic participation and hard work during their stay at Jamie's Farm.
Another student, Chelsea, added: “I have learned a lot of different things like looking after the animals on the farm. I had a very good experience at Jamie's Farm. I would recommend students to go to Jamie's Farm it would be a very good experience for the students to build their confidence.”
Our LFLW Curriculum Leader, Will Roberts, who was on the farm with the students, commended their accomplishments and the skills gained. He said, “The team at Jamie’s Farm Monmouth were welcoming and helpful. It is our second time partaking in the Jamie’s Farm residency, and we hope to do it a third time.
“Our students appreciated the opportunity to participate in activities outside the classroom. They demonstrated determination, problem-solving abilities, and an openness to try new tasks.
“To ensure full engagement and promote healthy habits, students were not allowed to have their phones, consume sugary snacks, or indulge in smoking or drinking. This helped them focus on the activities and their personal growth. Our time at the farm was valued by both students and staff.
“A massive well done to Abby, Mckenzie, Cassidy, Ellie, Levi, Phoenix, and Chelsea for their outstanding achievements at the farm!”
