We are collaborating to tackle green skills shortages

Posted: 25/04/2025

We are pleased to announce our involvement in a new cross-sector group committed to tackling green skills shortages in construction.

Barnsley College has joined a number of experts from housing, engineering, manufacturing and education, on the Yorkshire and the Humber Green Skills Advisory Panel (GSAP).

The group is part of a nationwide network of collaborative, member-led panels formed to support the delivery of green skills and employment pathways – meeting national net zero and construction recruitment targets.

The College joins EN:Able Communities, the charitable arm of housing consortium Efficiency North, Leeds College of Building, Sustainable Building Services (UK) Ltd, and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, on the Yorkshire and the Humber GSAP.

Barnsley College Deputy Chief Executive, Gavin Batty, said: “Tackling skills gaps in this key industry means working directly with employers and other partners to provide high-quality opportunities for students, and the current workforce.

“At Barnsley College, we are committed to supporting the national green skills agenda with innovative, future-focussed initiatives – ensuring students leave with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to contribute to a sustainable society.

“Working alongside our partners will allow us to continue driving positive change, sharing ideas and best practice, to ensure our region is at the forefront of creating accessible, sustainable careers and achieving net zero goals.”

The College’s involvement in the GSAP reinforces our commitment to improving green skills pathways, demonstrated in our recent opening of the Modern Methods of Construction Campus and launch of our immersive space – both of which are transformational leaps in construction education.
