We were honoured to represent Barnsley at a Hall of Fame celebration held by leading anti-racism charity Show Racism the Red Card at 10 Downing Street.

Barnsley College Cultural Capital and Personal Development Coordinator Lucy Evans was personally invited to the reception, where charity founder, ex-footballer Shaka Hislop, and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, spoke on the importance of uniting to fight racism and discrimination.

The College has had a longstanding relationship with Show Racism the Red Card. Our work was even featured in the charity’s Annual Review 2024, after more than 700 students took part in Wear Red Day activities and workshops.

Across 2024, we delivered 20 anti-racism workshops, as part of our cultural capital programme, which saw more than 3,000 students take part in all manner of activities – from tackling homelessness with the Rucksack Project to the College-wide Week of Culture which celebrated diversity.

The event, held on Monday, 2 June, at Downing Street and including a visit to Parliament, honoured individuals and organisations who have ‘tirelessly helped spread the message of equality and inclusion’ that the charity has represented since its formation in 1996.

Lucy called the day ‘one of the most memorable days of my professional and personal life’, adding: “It was a privilege to meet inspiring individuals from across different sectors, including many footballing legends and to be in the presence of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Show Racism the Red Card founder Shaka Hislop.

“I’m already looking forward to building on the incredible work we’ve started this academic year and continuing to drive meaningful change.”
