We are pleased to announce that we are the first educational institution to have all our Governors certified as Carbon Literate – further showing our commitment to embedding sustainability throughout the College.
The Board of Governors is responsible for overseeing all our operations, from finance to teaching and learning, and – as a group of experts from across industries working voluntarily to making the College exceptional – having them successfully complete Carbon Literacy training is a mark of our College-wide commitment.
Carbon Literacy is an awareness of climate change and the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities – giving people the ability and motivation to reduce emissions and understand their spheres of influence on an individual, community and organisational basis.
In the course of their training, all our Governors pledged to take climate action as individuals and within wider groups. As of the start of the current academic year, every College Governor was certified Carbon Literate.
Donavan Hutchinson, who has taken up a specific sustainability role within his position as Governor, said he is committed to encouraging his colleagues to promote sustainability wherever they go.
“It is a topic of conversation in every board meeting,” said Donavan, founder of D&A Services International, an independent consulting organisation for workplace health and wellbeing.
“Barnsley College is leading the way in Carbon Literacy, but every organisation has work still to be done and we are no different. We want to be sure Barnsley College is walking the walk – that everything we are doing on education and awareness is also being actioned within the organisation.
“It’s all about how we can be as impactful, and more vocal about marketing ourselves, to inspire other colleges and drive awareness in the local community and across the UK.”
