Have you ever dreamed of starting your own business, going to university, or making a difference in your local community? Studying Business at Barnsley College can help you achieve your goals – no matter how ambitious they may be.
We spoke to some of our most recent alumni to find out where their qualifications have taken them after their time at College.
Start a business
Amber Day studied Level 3 Business in 2020-21. “I chose to study at Barnsley College because they had the right course for me,” she explained. “I went to look at many other colleges, but the staff in the Barnsley College Business department made me feel the most comfortable and knew straight away what path I wanted to take and how they could help me.”
After working in hospitality for nearly five years, Amber had set her sights on something bigger. She would later go on to set up her very own business, Daygo’s Bistro, where she now works as the owner.
After some time spent refurbishing the property, Daygo’s Bistro had its grand opening on Saturday 21 August 2021.
“By studying Business at Barnsley College, it helped me with managing money and the financial side of things. It made me more aware of the reality of having your own business and the risks you have to take.” said Amber.
“Seeing my dream in front of my face at this age is a big thing for me.”
Go to university
Kyle Guest chose to study Level 3 Business at College because of “the ideal facilities, resources and the standard of teaching produced.”
He knew he wanted to proceed into higher education to study Business and Management – and was hoping to secure a place at university.
“It interested me to the point where I would now like to study it at university.
When asked if he would encourage others to follow the same path, he said: “I would definitely encourage new students to come and study Business at Barnsley College, as it will provide you with all the required information and support.
“Plus, all of the different detailed units will help students to understand how a business works, which is helpful if they are considering setting up their own business.”
Make a difference
Shannon Randle also studied Level 3 Business at College. She told us that the best part of her time here was “knowing that I have such amazing, inspirational tutors to speak to and learn from.
“This helped me develop knowledge and I enjoyed the positive relationships the tutors build with you… just knowing they want the best for you is great!”
She received help from the team at our Job Shop, which she felt gave her an advantage when it came to applying for her Degree Apprenticeship.
“They (the Job Shop) helped me on important aspects like personal statements for university, which benefited me because it meant my personal statement was more likely to be accepted, saving me time.”
She has now successfully embarked onto a very competitive – and special – apprenticeship programme.
“I have been accepted onto a degree apprenticeship with South Yorkshire Police, so I am already working towards my dream career.
“The best thing about studying Business is the amount of transferable skills it has. There are a wide range of careers that a business qualification can lead to due to the skills being so transferable.”
