Young entrepreneurs shine in Dragons’ Den-Style Challenge

Posted: 01/07/2025

Seven determined students have taken a big step toward making their business dreams a reality by pitching their ideas live to a panel of expert judges, just like on Dragons’ Den.

This exciting finale was the highlight of Enterprise's Barnsley College Futurepreneur programme, a project that helps young people turn their ideas into real businesses.

Throughout the programme, each student completed a series of enterprise challenges and received £200 in start-up funding. At the finale, they had the chance to pitch for even more support, up to £500 in total, to help grow their business further.

The judging panel included successful local business people and former students who are now thriving entrepreneurs themselves. Among them was Eloise Clarkson, who started her own crochet business, ExpressionEl, while studying Art and Design at Barnsley College. She returned as a guest judge to inspire this year’s group.

She said: "It was special to come back as a judge and have my journey recognised, it reminded me how much support like this helped me get started. I think it meant a lot for the students to see someone closer to their age up there. It shows that the dreams they have might be closer than they think."

The students impressed the panel with ideas ranging from eco-friendly fashion brands to custom-planned Disney holidays. Judges praised their confidence, creativity, and dedication.

Hayley Allsopp, Vice Principal of Curriculum and Student Experience, added: “I was really impressed by every student. The hard work they had put in was clear in each of their presentations. They all had strong, unique ideas, and I cannot wait to see how their businesses grow!”

Interested in joining Futurepreneurs?

The Futurepreneurs programme is currently closed for this academic year, but will reopen in September, and we’d love to see you apply!

Lee Perks, Careers and Enterprise Team Leader who oversees Futurepreneurs, shares this advice for anyone considering joining: “The Futurepreneur programme gives students at Barnsley College, Barnsley Sixth Form College, and the University Centre the funding, guidance, and confidence to bring their business ideas to life. This year’s event proved that with the right support, anything is possible.”
