Start Date / Duration

This is a flexible programme and can start at various times throughout the year and will take a minimum of 16 to 20 months to complete.

Entry requirements

  • Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking their end point assessment
  • There are no mandatory prerequisite qualifications, although as examples, the Multi Skills Coaching qualification at Level 2; Understanding the Principles of Behaviour Change; Using Sport to Tackle Youth Crime; or a related Apprenticeship at Level 2 might be deemed appropriate entry points for transition into this role

Course overview

The Community Sport and Health Officer apprenticeship is suitable for anyone who has a passion to positively influence sport and physical activity in their local community.

The key role of a Community Sport and Health Officer is to initiate behaviour change in local residents with regards engagement in sport and physical activity across local communities. By working within and across local organisations individuals will scope, organise and coordinate the delivery of opportunities for local communities to get more physically active.

Course content

The course comprises of knowledge, skills and behaviours, including initiating meaningful behaviour change, planning programmes, understanding what constitutes effective sport or physical activity programmes and how these can be used to prevent or minimise anti-social behaviour.  You will demonstrate how you empower people to adopt a more active lifestyle and your ability to adapt personally to ensure programmes are inclusive and customer focused.  You will also exhibit behaviours which include a strong work ethic, positive attitude and a willingness to contribute to your own continuing professional development.

You will be assessed externally through observations, case studies, presentations and panel interviews by an external organisation.

All equipment will be provided.

You will study 4 days per week within the workplace with one day attendance at Barnsley College Sports Academy, Honeywell Sports Centre, Honeywell Lane, Barnsley, S75 1BP.

Successful completers will be able to move into senior roles within the Sector – leading teams of people or specialising with certain populations, particular sports or programmes.

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).

This can be added to your study programme.
