Access to Higher Education (HE)

Are you ready to take the next step in your education but don’t meet the entry requirements for a degree, HNC/D, or Higher Apprenticeship?

Our Access to Higher Education (HE) Diplomas are the perfect starting point to help you achieve your goals. Designed for those returning to education, these diplomas will equip you with the confidence and skills needed to succeed at university-level.

Whether changing careers, advancing in your current field, or seeking formal recognition for your experience, this qualification is your pathway to a brighter future.

You can learn more at our University-level Open Day or contact our friendly Information Team at 01226 216 123 or info@barnsley.ac.uk.

Why study an Access to HE Diploma?

1) Flexible Study Options – Choose between full-time study to complete the diploma in one year or part-time study over two or more years, making it easier to balance work, family, and other commitments.

2) Open Doors to Higher Qualifications – An Access to HE Diploma paves the way for a Higher National Certificate/Diploma (HNC/D), degree, or Higher Apprenticeship, all of which enhance your employability and earning potential.

3) Reacquaint yourself with learning - Develop critical thinking and writing skills, preparing you for university-level study and beyond. Plus, with the potential for reduced fees or loans that may be written off upon completing your higher education, it’s an investment in your future.

4) Prepare for Specialised Fields – If you're interested in studying Access to HE in Childcare or Health but don't meet the entry requirements, our Level 2 Pre-Access course in Health, Childcare, and Education will help you get ready for the next step.

What Access to Higher Education courses are available to study?

How much does an Access to HE course cost?

The cost of an Access to HE course can be up to £3,928, but there are various funding options available to help cover the fees.

If you’re over 19, you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help finance your course. The best part? If you go on to complete a higher education qualification, such as a degree, the outstanding balance of your loan will be written off—provided you successfully complete both courses (the HE course doesn’t have to be related to the Access to HE course).

Additionally, you may qualify for free or reduced course fees, depending on your personal circumstances. There are also scholarships and bursaries available at the College. For more details on financial support, visit our Financial Support page.

"I returned to education as an adult to study the Level 3 Access to Higher Education in Health and Social Care Professions, along with GCSE Biology, at Barnsley College.

I absolutely loved my time there and learned so much, which has been invaluable in my university journey.

Without Viv's support, I wouldn't be where I am today as an adult nursing student at Sheffield Hallam University. The guidance from Barnsley College was crucial from the start – I met with Viv, shared my goals, and she helped me understand all my options.

I can't recommend Barnsley College enough. The staff are fantastic, and the support they provide is outstanding."

Course: Level 3 Access to Higher Education in Criminal Justice and Policing Studies

"I completed my Level 3 Access to Higher Education: Criminal Justice and Policing Studies course, before working towards my degree in criminology. The hybrid working options (evenings and weekend classes) on this course gave me a fantastic range of options with a good level of autonomy to develop myself and fit classes around my current commitments to work.

I’m currently 45 years of age and had reservations for many years about going back into education, ‘why do I need it’, ‘what if I am too old’, ‘what if it’s pointless’, ‘how will I find the time’, trust me, investing in yourself is not a waste of time. You will not regret it later down the line, grow yourself through experiences, meet great people, set yourself up for as many career options as you can, it’s never too late!"
