Foundation Learning Level 1 Study Programme

This study programme will provide you with the essential skills required to enable personal development in preparation for life, learning and employment.

Please note: this course is suitable for students who do not meet the entry requirements for Level 2 or above courses or students who would benefit from an additional year of support and development in preparation for higher level vocational courses.

Your course will include:

  • Tutorials – Weekly group and 1:1 sessions to develop personal and social skills and to set and review targets

  • Personal and social development – Developing skills including working as a team, resilience, communication, developing a positive outlook as well as support with identifying and applying for the next step for you.

  • Maths and English – Functional Skills or GCSEs at the right level for you.

  • Vocational option – You will have the opportunity to get hands-on and try out other subject areas in College such as: Animal Care, Catering, Childcare and Health, Creative Arts, Construction, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, Esports and Public Services.

How much does the course cost?

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Course Content

  • You must be 16-18 years of age (or 19-25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan).

  • Some 14-16 year olds may also be able to join the course.

  • This course is suitable for students who do not meet the entry requirements for Level 2 or above courses.

Mostly by assessment but some student may take examinations in English and Maths.

You will require a ring binder and pens.

Award

Many students go onto work towards a higher level qualification.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 - 19 and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which maybe added to your study programme, subject to approval from your chosen department.

If you're aged 19 or above and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
