Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning In Schools Level 3 Certificate Part-time (ITS)

The qualification has been designed to support the development needs of individuals working in a role supporting children and young people in schools.

Course content

This course will cover the following units:

• Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults

• Schools as organisations

• Support learning activities

• Promote children and young people’s positive behaviour

• Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults

• Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people

• Support assessment for learning

• Engage in personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

• Support children and young people’s health and safety

• Understand child and young person development

• Understand how to safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people

In addition, you must complete 12 credits from specialist groups. Details to be provided upon enquiry.

This course is fully funded, subject to eligibility.

Free courses for jobs

If you are aged 19 or over, you may not have to pay for this course if:

  • You do not already have a Level 3 qualification OR
  • You already have a Level 3 qualification or higher but earn below the earnings threshold set by your local authority, which includes benefits (see below) OR
  • You already have a Level 3 qualification or higher but are unemployed and in receipt of a means-tested benefit, below the earnings threshold set by your local authority (see below).

This course is funded by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and/or West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA). You must be living in the South or West Yorkshire regions to qualify for funding.

Earnings Threshold

  • If you live in the qualifying West Yorkshire region and earn below £25,000 a year, then you may not have to pay for this course.
  • If you live in the qualifying South Yorkshire region and earn below £30,476 a year, then you may not have to pay for this course.

Course Content

  • be aged 19 or above.

  • pass an initial assessment

  • be working in a role that allows you to be able to demonstrate learning outcomes relating to practice in your day-to-day work. These roles could include:

    • full or part-time employment

    • permanent or temporary

    • employed by the school or local authority

    • school-based or peripatetic

      working in a maintained, non-maintained or independent school.

You will complete assessments in the workplace including observations, professional discussions, questioning and research.

You will need a laptop and access to the internet.

Diploma

This qualification provides the recognition to lead to a supervisory / leadership role within a teaching assistant team.

You could progress onto specialist roles such as Supporting gifted and talented learners, Team leadership, Bilingual support, Invigilation and / or Special Educational Needs support.

This qualification is often taken as a step on the transition from a classroom Teaching Assistant into a teaching role.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 - 19 and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which maybe added to your study programme, subject to approval from your chosen department.

If you're aged 19 or above and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
