GXO Logistics and Barnsley College – A Decade of Apprenticeship Success
A Partnership That Delivers
Over the past ten years, Barnsley College and GXO Logistics have built a strong and successful apprenticeship partnership, helping shape the future workforce in logistics and supply chain management. This long-standing collaboration demonstrates how education and industry can work hand-in-hand to develop skilled, confident, and career-ready individuals.
GXO, a global logistics company, continues to invest in apprenticeship programmes because of the tangible benefits they bring, not just to the business, but to the people they employ.
“Apprenticeships offer a structured pathway for individuals to grow while contributing meaningfully to the business. Those entering the business through these pathways bring energy, adaptability, and a strong desire to learn - qualities that not only enhance team dynamics but also drive continuous improvement across the organisation.”

Why GXO Chooses Barnsley College
For GXO, working with Barnsley College means accessing high-quality, tailored training that complements the company’s operational needs. The College delivers industry-relevant learning through experienced tutors who understand both the sector and the learners.
The College’s flexibility in adapting programmes, its understanding of the local labour market, and its excellent learner support services are key to the partnership’s success.
“Barnsley College consistently delivers high-quality, theory-based learning through experienced and passionate trainers who understand the needs of both learners and the industry. Their ability to tailor content, provide personalised support, and maintain high academic standards ensures that every individual is equipped with the knowledge and tools to succeed.”

Apprenticeship Impact: Real Results
The success of this partnership is evident, with a 99.9% pass rate for GXO apprentices supported by Barnsley College over the decade long partnership. Since the transition to the Apprenticeship Standard in October 2023, every apprentice enrolled has achieved a Distinctions in their End-Point Assessments (EPA). This achievement reflects the strength of the programme and the culture of support at both GXO and the College.
Apprentices at GXO gain more than technical knowledge, they grow into confident professionals. Many begin with limited experience, but quickly develop skills in communication, IT, teamwork, and problem-solving. They also build resilience and gain a clearer picture of their future career path.
“Together with the GXO apprenticeship management team and training department, the College Functional Skills Tutors and ALS support team, I feel a unique relationship has formed that supports apprentices to reach their chosen learning and development goals. We focus on each apprentices needs to understand their aspirations and offer opportunities and supporting them to achieve the highest grade.”
Chris Doughty, Trainer for Supply Chain Warehouse Operative Apprenticeships, Barnsley College
“As apprentices we are building our soft skills like communication, teamwork and problem-solving. This increases our confidence, adaptability and a stronger sense of professionalism preparing us for future career development.”
Eliza Frydrych, GXO Apprentice
“At the beginning, using a computer was scary for me. But thanks to my mentors and team leaders, I improved every day. It’s still not perfect, but it’s a lot better and that gives me confidence.”

Career Progression and Long-Term Growth
For many GXO apprentices, completing their programme is just the beginning. Successful apprentices often move into permanent roles within the company across areas such as Stock Control, Administration, HR, and Transport. They also have access to further learning through higher-level apprenticeships or leadership training.
The opportunity to grow within the organisation is a major benefit, helping GXO retain motivated and skilled employees who already understand the company culture.
“We’ve seen apprentices go on to mentor others, explore new departments, and continue their studies. Their success feeds into the company’s success.”

A Culture of Inclusion and Support
One of the most powerful outcomes of the GXO and Barnsley College partnership is the positive workplace culture it promotes. Apprentices consistently report feeling welcomed, respected, and supported throughout their journey.
“I experienced great workplace culture when I joined the apprenticeship program. I have observed respectful leadership in action. Our leaders value and appreciate all team members, foster communication and create an environment where everyone feels heard and valued.”

“I'm very proud to have supported and been associated with the Barnsley College and GXO partnership. I take great satisfaction in seeing each apprentice develop a better understanding of GXO warehousing and realise the importance of their roles and guide them on how to make a positive impact on performance and quality.
“I love my role as a College tutor, delivering the essential knowledge, as well as having the opportunity to work with the apprentices on-site at GXO, developing their skills and behaviours, preparing them for End Point Assessment. We challenge the apprentices with various learning opportunities and it's great to see them develop confidence in themselves and realise their potential for the future.”
