Course overview

An Infrastructure Technician provides support to internal and external customers of an organisation helping them to be productive when using technology in their job roles.  The Infrastructure Technician sets people up on systems and provides support when they need it, rectifying issues to maintain productivity.

Typical Job Roles:  Help Desk Technician, First or second line IT support, Network Support.

Course content

You will study:

Technical Competencies

  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate
  • Apply IT Security
  • Adding mobile devices to a network
  • Recording and analysing data at an appropriate level
  • Problem solving using techniques to resolve problems
  • Workflow management:  works flexibly and demonstrates ability to work under pressure
  • Health and Safety – Interprets and follows IT legislation
  • Optimise the performance of hardware, software and network systems

Technical Knowledge and Understanding

  • Working knowledge of cabling and connectivity
  • Maintenance processes and their application
  • Architecture of computer systems
  • Skills necessary to maintain a secure network
  • Differences and benefits of operating systems
  • How to deploy and securely integrate mobile devices
  • Working knowledge of Cloud Services
  • The Importance of disaster recovery
  • Similarities and differences between a range of coding and logic
  • Working knowledge of business processes

How will I be assessed?

Your assessment will include a portfolio of work completed during your apprenticeship, a synoptic project, an employer reference that reviews how well you have performed and an interview with an assessor.  You may undertake a vendor qualification as part of the apprenticeship.

What equipment will I need?

You will need to provide your own writing materials and a USB stick.

Where will I study?

You will study within the workplace and attend classes at Barnsley College Old Mill Lane Campus, Church Street, Barnsley, S70 2AX.

What can I do next?

Upon completion you can progress onto a Level 4 apprenticeship such as a Network Engineer or a degree apprenticeship or continue in employment.

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
