Course overview

This course is for people with a good level of English who want to find jobs where they need a certain level in English, or who would like to gain qualifications in other subjects. We have highly qualified experts ready to help you! You will learn how to make and understand lots of different types of sentences and use them to talk about lots of different subjects.

Course content

You will study five units, these are:

  • Food and hobbies (including things like numbers, dates, food, clothes, shopping, TV, going to a coffee shop, using a library and volunteering for charity)
  • Life in the UK (music, art, festivals, homes, family, neighbours and social media)
  • Activity and health (sport, human body, going to the doctor, sleep and stress)
  • English for work (jobs, places of work, getting jobs, interviews, technology and internet)
  • The natural world (animals, transport, holidays, airports and museums)

Speaking and listening exams take place in April. If needed, you can try again in June.

You can move on to a higher level ESOL course or GCSE English (or Functional Skills English if you aren’t ready for the GCSE just yet). You can also study any other subject at College if you meet the entry criteria. You will have enough English to feel confident in job interviews and to work in jobs which require a good level of English.

 

How much does the course cost?

If you aren’t eligible for funding, the cost will be £225. Asylum seekers, people on Universal Credit, and people working part time or earning less than £21,255 per year do not pay.

Extra information

Part-time courses are only available for learners who are 19 years old and above. You may not have to pay for this course if you are employed but earn below £21,255 a year, or if you receive Job Seekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit. If you are unemployed, actively seeking employment and receive Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit, Income Support or WFTC then you may also receive funding for this course. You will need to provide evidence of your eligibility which will be checked at enrolment.

This course is funded by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and/or West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA). You must be living in the South or West Yorkshire regions to qualify for funding.
