The course can be tailored to an individual's needs and can start at anytime throughout the year. The length of the course will depend on the individual tailored programme.

Entry requirements
  • You must be 16-18 years
  •  14-16 year olds may also be able to join the course
You will achieve
  • You will achieve an Award/Certificate or Diploma in Skills for Employment and Further Learning OR Employability Skills Level 1
  • Functional skills or GCSE in English and maths

Course overview

Sometimes we all need a fresh start. We recognise that some students can often face setbacks that are sometimes difficult to overcome. Foundation Learning at Barnsley College can offer a fantastic opportunity to get your College career on track and maybe even on the road to employment. We will help you focus on personal development and the skills you need to help you thrive in a life at College or in a job.

Course content

You will have the opportunity to choose from the following vocational areas:
• Animal Care/Landbased
• Art and Design
• Construction
• Engineering
• Hair and Beauty
• Media
• Sports and Recreation

You will study English and maths as part of your course (either GCSE or Functional Skills). Developing your English and maths skills is important in order to progress to another course

How will I be assessed?

Mostly by assessment but some learners may take examinations in English and maths.

You will require a ring binder and pens.

How much does the course cost?

This course is free.

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Want to join Barnsley Sports Academy and the Sports Village?

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.
