Course overview

This course will provide learners with the essential skills required to enable personal development in preparation for life, learning and employment. The course can be run on a full time or a part time basis. The programme is also suitable for

Foundation Learning is predominantly a 16-18 provision but is also suitable for:

  • 14-16 learners  (school and EHE)
  • 19-24 year old learners who have an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP)

Course content

Foundation Learning is a flexible study programme that gives you the opportunity to try different things at Entry Level (1-3) or Level 1. You will follow a bespoke study programme, tailored to your needs. You will also spend time on placement in a real work environment. The areas to choose from are as follows;

  • Art and Design
  • Business
  • Construction
  • Catering
  • Engineering
  • Hair and Beauty
  • Health and Social Care
  • Animal Care
  • Sports and Recreation
  • Media

Functional skills/GCSE Maths and English will also be studied.

How will I be assessed?

Mostly by assessment but some learners may take examinations in English and Maths

You will require a ring binder and pens.

How much does the course cost?

This course is free

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
