Students land work after two-week College placement

Two of our students are on the road to building their dream careers after their work placement landed them part-time roles in just two weeks.

Redd Burrell and Jake Booler – Level 3 Applied Science students – are part of our first cohort to be offered placements and have set the bar after impressing staff at Sharlston Pharmacy to secure permanent jobs.

Redd and Jake are in the final year of their two-year vocational course that is aimed at broadening their theoretical knowledge in chemistry, physics and biology.

“Jake and Redd were a valued asset at the pharmacy. They were always interested in what we do and how and why we do things, as well as the rules and regulations we must follow on a continual basis.”

The pair worked in the pharmacy’s walk-in clinic, dealing with large groups of people, and distributing Covid jabs to the public, which helped them understand how pharmacies operate and develop transferrable skills.

The experience they have gained through their work placement will further assist them in achieving their ambitions of continuing to university and higher levels of study after completing their course.

Jake Dooler said: “The placement was very informative and helped me overcome the social awkwardness of talking to people I don’t know, which will definitely help me in my future.

“After college, I’m hoping to study Forensic and Analytical Science at the University of Huddersfield and my course and placement have provided me with experience that will help in future studies or jobs.”

Redd Burrell, added: “The placement provided me with a lot of knowledge about pharmacies and I gained valuable experience from working with different people, especially the skills I have learned from handling groups of people without stressing.”

Tracy Clerehugh, Pharmacy Manager for S H Pharam Limited, said: “Jake and Redd were a valued asset at the pharmacy. They were always interested in what we do and how and why we do things, as well as the rules and regulations we must follow on a continual basis.

“They were an absolute pleasure to work with, never late, and completed any task that was asked of them with high levels of enthusiasm – a credit to the college.”

Tom Swales, Applied Science Course Leader, said: “I’m incredibly proud of Jake and Redd. They both put 110% into their placements and because of this have both been offered part-time jobs at the Pharmacy.”
