Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 2/3 or above including English and Maths.

You will achieve

Level 2 Certificate of Technical Competence in Animal Health, Husbandry and Handling (Small Holding – Poultry).

Level 2 Certificate of Technical Competence in Animal Health, Husbandry and Handling (Small Holding – Goat).

Level 2 Certificate of Technical Competence in Animal Health, Husbandry and Handling (Small Holding – Pig).

Level 2 Certificate of Technical Competence in Animal Health, Husbandry and Handling (Small Holding – Sheep).

Level 2 Certificate of Technical Competence in Animal Health, Husbandry and Handling (Small Holding – Cattle).

Level 2 Certificate of Technical Competence in Health and Safety for Land-based Industries.

Course overview

Do you want to work with animals and make a difference to their lives? Our Level 2 Agriculture course will set you on your way.

This course allows you to gain the practical skills and knowledge that are important for working with farm animals specifically cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and poultry.

The course is based at Wigfield Farm, our very own working farm and visitor attraction based in Worsbrough Barnsley. You will be taught by our experienced team of agriculture teachers, some of which have their own farms and years of experience managing poultry, cattle, sheep and goats.

This course is ideal if you are interested in a career within the agricultural industry, including farm worker or manager, agronomist and feed nutritionist.

Course content

This one-year qualification combines theory and practical sessions giving you the skills you will need to progress to secure employment in the agricultural industry, progressing to a Level 3 in agriculture or work-based learning.

You will cover a range of topics including:

  • The suitability of different husbandry production systems
  • Husbandry breed selection
  • Behaviours within husbandry
  • Husbandry diet and health

You will also study the following mandatory units:

  • Health and safety in a land-based setting
  • Cattle – Health, husbandry and handling
  • Sheep – Health, husbandry and handling
  • Pigs – Health, husbandry and handling
  • Goats – Health, husbandry and handling
  • Poultry – Health, husbandry and handling

At the start of your course, you will be provided with:

  • A booklet that includes the key information required to complete the qualification
  • Information about health and safety

You will complete a one-to-one practical assessment with oral questioning and theory booklets.

All students on land-based programmes are required to wear standard uniform and also PPE for practical work in the form of steel toe capped boots and overalls.

Long hair will also need to be tied back.

Upon completion, you could progress onto the Level 3 Agriculture course, or work- based learning courses or secure employment as a farm worker or manager, agronomist or feed nutritionist.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).

This can be added to your study programme.
