Start Date / Duration

You can start an Apprenticeship at any time and it will take 24 months to complete.

Entry requirements

You will:

  • Need to be at least 18 years old
  • Possess a relevant Level 3 qualification or equivalent
  • Hold GCSE Grade 4/C or above in English Language (or the equivalent)
  • Need to be employed as a Deputy Manager or Manager within a residential childcare setting.

Also, you must undertake the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) process and provide the result to us.

You will achieve

  • Level 5 Children, Young People and Families Manager Apprenticeship (NCFE)
  • Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (NCFE)

Course overview

This apprenticeship will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to manage others in working with children, young people and families to achieve positive outcomes and sustainable change in lives.

Apprentices may be able to progress to the following job roles:

  • Manager in a children’s residential Care setting.
  • Children, Young People and Families Manager in a range of settings in local authorities, including health organisations, educational and early years settings or children’s centres, as well as a wide range of private voluntary and community organisations.

The Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (England) serves as the required qualification under The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015.

Course content

This qualification will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that will enable them to actively support each child, young person, young adult and family to achieve their potential.

You will study a range of modules including:

  • Understanding children and young people’s development in residential childcare
  • Lead and manage a team within a residential childcare setting
  • Lead practice to support the safeguarding and protection of children and young people in residential childcare
  • Lead practice for communication and information management in residential childcare settings

You will be assessed through practical observations within the workplace and coursework.

Upon completion of the course you will be expected to undertake an Endpoint Assessment which includes:

  • Situational Judgment Test
  • A competency interview informed by a one-to-one practical assessment with oral questioning and theory booklets

You will require access to a computer and the internet.

You will gain a licence to practice as a Registered Manager in children’s residential settings.

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which can be added to your study programme.

If you’re aged 19 or above and don’t hold a a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
