Management and Leadership (CMI) Level 5

Start Date / Duration

The start dates throughout the year are as follows: 15 September 2023, January 2024, April 2024 and June 2024 This course can run for up to two years. Attendance will depend on which pathway you enrol to.

Entry requirements

Participants will be in a management role.

  • There are no formal educational requirements, but learners should be working in an area that will enable them to benefit from the programme
  • GCSE Maths and English grade A to C (4 and above), or equivalent are desirable
  • All candidates will be interviewed before being accepted onto the programme

You will achieve

CMI Level 5 Management and Leadership either an Award, Certificate or Diploma.

Course overview

These qualifications are aimed at practising or aspiring managers and leaders who are typically accountable to a senior manager or business owner. The primary role of a practising or aspiring manager and leader is to lead and manage individuals and teams to deliver aims and objectives in line with organisational strategy.  Role and responsibilities may also include but are not limited to developing teams and individuals, creating operational plans, planning and managing projects, managing change, managing finance, resources and identifying new approaches to business activities, managing quality and continuous improvement as well as managing the human resources function.

The qualifications have been designed for practising or aspiring managers in roles such as:

  • Operations manager
  • Divisional manager
  • Departmental manager
  • Regional manager
  • Specialist manager

It can be offered via different attendance patterns (classroom, online learning or work-based) and we can offer the award, certificate and diploma depending on your specific requirement.

Course content

This course is offered on the part-time basis.  There are 8 units to complete:

  • Leadership and management in an organisational context
  • Managing teams and individuals to achieve success
  • Managing stakeholder relationships
  • Managing projects
  • Managing change
  • Operational planning
  • Managing finance
  • Personal and professional development

Each unit is delivered as a taught session, except for personal and professional development.  Each unit has a structured assignment that you must complete following the session at college.

The course works on a roll on roll off basis, so you can enrol to the course at any time throughout the year. During the sessions, you will get the opportunity to interact and network with peers from a range of industries, sharing ideas and best practice, creating a learning environment where innovation can thrive.

Following each session, you will complete self-directed learning and further study on each of the module, using online tools that you will gain access to via the CMI learning portal.  This will allow you time to complete each of the assignments before the next session you attend. You will also have 1-1 support from your Trainer via telephone, email and video conferencing, as required.

You will submit one assignment per unit.  This will be submitted to your Trainer through the Eportfolio system, OneFile.

You will need a computer with internet access.

Depending on your chosen qualification, you may attend lessons in our Old Mill Lane campus on online.

You may wish to further your ongoing personal and professional development by accessing other CMI qualifications, such as the CMI Level 7 Qualifications in Management and Leadership with the goal of becoming a Chartered Manager.   

How much does the course cost?

Course fees are as follows; The CMI Level 5 Award is £350 There is no funding available The CMI Level 5 Certificate is £650. There is no funding available The CMI Level 5 Diploma  has a fee of £1650 but learners can take out an advanced learner loan to the value of £724 to cover some of the cost.
