The next start date for this course is April 2024. Course start dates are September, January, April and June. The Award can be completed in up to 3 months. The Certificate can be completed in up to 6 months. The Diploma can be completed in up to 2 years.

Entry requirements

Participants will be in a management role.

  • There are no formal educational requirements, but learners should be working in an area that will enable them to benefit from the programme
  • GCSE Maths and English grade A to C (4 and above), or equivalent are desirable
  • All candidates will be interviewed before being accepted onto the programme

You will achieve

CMI Level 5 Management and Leadership either an Award, Certificate or Diploma.

Course overview

These qualifications are aimed at practising or aspiring managers and leaders who are typically accountable to a senior manager or business owner. The primary role of a practising or aspiring manager and leader is to lead and manage individuals and teams to deliver aims and objectives in line with organisational strategy.  Role and responsibilities may also include, but are not limited to, developing teams and individuals, creating operational plans, planning and managing projects, managing change, managing finance, resources and identifying new approaches to business activities, managing quality and continuous improvement as well as managing the human resources function.

The qualifications have been designed for practising or aspiring managers in roles such as:

  • Operations manager
  • Divisional manager
  • Departmental manager
  • Regional manager
  • Specialist manager

This course is classroom based and sessions happen 9.30am – 12.30am on Friday mornings roughly every month. 

Course content

This course is offered on the part-time basis. An applicant can start on the Award and, if they wish to, continue onto the certificate and then onto the diploma.

Management and Leadership (CMI) Level 5 Award

There is one unit to complete in up to 3 months:

  • Principles of Operational Leadership and Management in an Organisational Context

Management and Leadership (CMI) Level 5 Certificate

There are two units to complete in up to 6 months:

  • Principles of Operational Leadership and Management in an Organisational Context
  • Principles of Developing, Managing and Leading Individuals and Teams to Achieve Success

Management and Leadership (CMI) Level 5 Diploma

There are 7 units to complete in up to 2 years:

  • Principles of Operational Leadership and Management in an Organisational Context
  • Principles of Developing, Managing and Leading Individuals and Teams to Achieve Success
  • Managing stakeholder relationships
  • Managing change
  • Managing projects to achieve results
  • Managing Finance
  • Using Reflective Practice to Inform Personal and Professional Development

Each unit is delivered as a taught session, except for Using Reflective Practice to Inform Personal and Professional Development. Each unit has a structured assignment that you must complete.

The course works on a roll on roll off basis, so you can enrol to the course at various times throughout the year. You will get the opportunity to interact and network with peers from a range of industries, sharing ideas and best practice, creating a learning environment where innovation can thrive.

Assignments will be completed and submitted online via the CMI learning portal. You will also have 1-1 support from your Trainer via telephone, email and video conferencing, as required.

You will submit one assignment per unit.  This will be submitted to your Trainer through the Eportfolio system, OneFile.

You may wish to further your ongoing personal and professional development by accessing other CMI qualifications, such as the CMI Level 7 Qualifications in Management and Leadership with the goal of becoming a Chartered Manager.   

How much does the course cost?

Course fees are as follows; The CMI Level 5 Award is £350. There is no funding available so applicants must pay the full cost. The CMI Level 5 Certificate is £650. There is no funding available so all applicants must pay the full cost. The CMI Level 5 Diploma  has a fee of £1650 but learners can take out an advanced learner loan to the value of £724 to cover some of the cost.
