This apprenticeship programme can be started at any time during the year. You are given 12 months to learn the course and an additional three months for your End-point Assessment.

Entry requirements

You will need to:

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Find an employer to employ you as an apprentice. Please see our Apprenticeship Vacancies for the latest opportunities. Individual employers will set their own entry requirements and selection criteria for their apprenticeship job role.

Hold Level 1 English and Maths qualifications and be able to take the test for Level 2 English and Maths qualifications prior to taking the End-point Assessment towards the end of your apprenticeship.

The logistics sector is fast paced and opportunities in this area are in high demand. This apprenticeship enables you to work to ensure the rapid distribution of goods in transit to and from couriers and postal services.

The broad purpose of the apprenticeship is to contribute to the successful processing of items within the expected timeframe.

Course content

Express Delivery Sortation Hub Operatives receive, assess and sort goods by destination. These goods are then collected for ‘final mile’ delivery. Goods are typically small enough for manual handling, and could be almost anything, from online shopping orders intended for home delivery through to business-to-business sales. Express Delivery Sortation Hub Operatives are vital in ensuring the smooth running of these complex, often automated operations.

On this apprenticeship, you will study:

  • Receiving and matching items for sortation
  • Operating sortation equipment
  • Teamwork and compliance
  • Sortation Hub landscape
  • Best practice
  • Operational performance
  • Maintenance, emergencies and incidents

You will be required to attend College approximately one day a week for lessons that teach the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the Apprenticeship Standard. The rest of your week will be spent in the workplace developing your knowledge, skills and behaviours while carrying out the duties of your job role.

The learning and development period will last for 12 months with a final End-point Assessment. The End-point Assessment consists of a professional discussion, workplace observation and a knowledge exam. The exam will be carried out by the selected End-point Assessment organisation and is graded as Pass or Distinction.

All equipment will be provided.

You will study within the workplace and attend classes at Barnsley College’s Old Mill Lane Campus, Church Street, Barnsley, S70 2YW.

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.
