Games Design and Development – Introduction

Start Date / Duration

This course is planning to start w/c 16 September. Lessons will be for 12 weeks, dates and times to be confirmed, term-time only.

Entry requirements

There is no requirement for you to have achieved any qualifications or units prior to undertaking this qualification, however a comprehensive standard of computer literacy skills are required due to the nature of the software  you will be using.

You must be aged 19 or above to study this course.

Gateway Level 2 Certificate in Digital and IT Skills

Course overview

The Introduction to Games Design and Development course is designed to equip aspiring game designers with the essential knowledge and digital skills needed to kickstart a rewarding career in the dynamic games industry.

Through this course you will start to use industry-leading software, such an Unreal Engine 5 and Unity, alongside an introduction to other applications used in game design, such as Maya and Blender.

If you are considering a career working in the games industry, this course is a great way to start learning the basics before progressing on to the next level.

Course content

You will study the following units:

Digital Skills Career
This unit serves as the gateway to understanding the critical role of digital skills in today’s rapidly evolving workforce. Delve into the intricacies of various job roles that demand digital proficiency, explore the key attributes valued by employers, and chart a strategic career trajectory aligned with your aspirations in the burgeoning digital economy.

Games Engines

Uncover the inner workings of game engines and unlock the secrets to harnessing their power in game development. Through hands-on exploration, you’ll gain proficiency in navigating both 2D and 3D game engines, allowing you to conceptualize, plan, and execute captivating game projects with finesse and precision.

Games Design and Development

Ignite your creativity as you embark on the exhilarating journey of transforming innovative ideas into fully realised game prototypes. Dive deep into the intricacies of game design, mastering the art of crafting compelling visuals and meticulous design proposals that breathe life into your gaming concepts. Through interactive workshops and practical exercises, you’ll refine your game development skills and emerge with a portfolio of impressive game prototypes ready to captivate audiences.

You will be assessed using a range of methods such as practical tasks and written coursework within a portfolio of evidence. This portfolio will be used to determine your grade.

Learners can progress onto the Level 3 Games Design and Development course starting after Christmas.

How much does the course cost?

This course costs £362. This course may be FREE to study depending on your circumstances – please see the drop-down option below for more details.

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

Extra information

Part-time courses are only available for learners who are 19 years old and above. You may not have to pay for this course if you are employed but earn below £21,255 a year, or if you receive Job Seekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit. If you are unemployed, actively seeking employment and receive Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit, Income Support or WFTC then you may also receive funding for this course. You will need to provide evidence of your eligibility which will be checked at enrolment.

This course is funded by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and/or West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA). You must be living in the South or West Yorkshire regions to qualify for funding.
