Course overview

If you love to be around cars, becoming a Motor Vehicle Technician is a dream job. 

Motor Vehicle Technicians maintain and repair vehicles and tune engines. They also install parts and accessories and diagnose and rectify faults.

You will work in real, practical situations to enable you to develop the skills and experience necessary to operate and maintain a modern motor car safely and efficiently.

 

Course content

The topics you will study are as follows:

  • Automotive vehicle workshop practices.
  • Inspection of vehicles.
  • Diagnose and rectify faults in engines systems.
  • Diagnose and rectify faults in chassis systems.
  • Diagnose and rectify faults in transmission systems.
  • Employability rights and responsibilities and health and safety legislation.
  • Applied Maths, Electronics, Science and ICT.

Assessment is by a series of on-line exams and coursework.

You will require safety boots, workshop overalls, a ring binder, memory stick, calculator, textbook and general stationery.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
