Course overview

Do you want to maintain and repair different types of vehicles including cars, vans or trucks? 

This course is suitable for anyone who has an interest in starting or developing a career in the motor industry.

You will study in our Automotive Technologies Centre where you will have the opportunity to work on a range of vehicles. 

Course themes:

  • Remove and refit braking, suspension, steering and exhaust components
  • Remove and refit wheels and tyres and dispose of waste material
  • Identify components and understand their operation

Course content

You will work in real, practical situations to enable you to develop the skills and experience necessary to perform fitting operations on a modern motor car safely and efficiently.

You will study the following units:

Developing self and working safely with others in which you will learn how to:

  • Contribute to good housekeeping in a motor vehicle environment
  • Establish, maintain and strengthen working relationships
  • Apply safe working practices
  • Comply with statutory regulations
  • Identify and follow accident and emergency procedures

Remove and refit chassis components which you will learn how to:

  • Remove and refit braking, suspension, steering and exhaust components
  • Remove and refit wheels and tyres and dispose of waste material
  • Identify components and understand their operation
  • Prepare and use workshop equipment required to remove and replace components
  • Follow instructions for using hand tools to remove and replace components
  • Remove and replace components and dispose of waste material

Each unit is assessed by means of practical assessment and multiple choice online exams.

You will require writing and drawing materials. You will also need suitable footwear and clothing for workshop activities.

On completion of this programme learners that show good progress and achievement can be considered for entry on to the Motor Vehicle Modern Apprenticeship programmes offered by local companies in partnership with Barnsley College. Alternatively you may want to continue onto Level 2Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about Further Education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which can be added to your study programme.

If you’re aged 19 or above and don’t hold a a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
