Entry requirements

  • Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above including GCSE English and Maths
  • You will need to have a basic standard of musicianship
  • You will also need to demonstrate your musical skills at interview

Course overview

If you have a particular interest or are considering a career in the music industry, this study programme is for you. Throughout this practical course you will be provided with many opportunities for instrumental development, live performance, music composition and studio recording. You will also develop understanding of the wider music industry and music history and theory.

Course content

This is a very practical course that provides many opportunities for instrumental development, playing in bands, rehearsing and gigging. This course will help you to understand music and music theory plus will teach you skills in:

  • Live performance
  • Studio recording
  • Listening skills
  • Composition
  • Music theory
  • Roles in the music industry

 

 

 

You will be assessed on your practical work and coursework.

Your own instrument, and the ability to play it to a reasonable level, is essential.

  • Employment: this course can form the foundations for future study and work in this industry
  • Education: You could progress onto an Extended Diploma course at Barnsley College in an area of Music such as Music Performance or Music Production. To do so, you need to achieve a Merit grade for your Diploma. To progress onto the Extended Diploma in Music Technology you need to gain GCSE Maths at grade C or above. We can offer this alongside the Diploma course. Many students then continue to university.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).

This can be added to your study programme.
