This course will commence in September 2024 for a 36 week duration. It holds 3 days a week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (subject to change).

This course is for 16-18 year olds.

GCSE grade 3 in English and Maths.

Course overview

As a plumber you could work on installing or maintaining heating systems, fitting domestic appliances, or fitting bathrooms and emergency repairs. If you want a varied job that makes good use of your practical skills and takes you out and about, this could be perfect for you. You will need to be good at solving problems, have the ability to follow technical plans, and understand the importance of health and safety and customer care.

Course content

The duration of the course covers the following units in technical knowledge understanding and practical training and development in the following areas:

Introduction to health and safety in construction
Connecting pipes and fitting appliances
Installing rain water goods
Installing and testing components of plumbing systems
Commissioning and decommissioning systems
Maintaining the effective operation of systems

There will be assessment windows throughout the study programme where your knowledge and understanding will be assessed for a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. You will be provided with a Synoptic practical skills test on the practical skills you have developed throughout your training. The knowledge exam will assess your understanding of the knowledge you have developed and will either be a paper-based or computer-based test. Achieving this Technical Certificate means that you have reached the standards expected by the industry

Basic stationery for the classroom activities.

There are 5 points of PPE required in the workshop at all times. Each student is expected to provide their own safety boots and the department will provide the other 4 pieces:
Hi-viz vest
Hard hat
Eye safety
Gloves

T Level in Building Services Engineering (Plumbing occupation).
Apprenticeship in Plumbing (successful employer support required to take this option).

How much does the course cost?

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.
