Site Carpentry Level 2 Diploma Full-time

Start Date

This course will commence in September 2024 for a 36 week duration. It holds 3 days a week between Monday and Friday.

Entry requirements

This course is for 16-18 year olds.

Successful completion at Diploma Level 1 in Carpentry and Joinery.
GCSE grade 3 in either English or Maths and GCSE grade 2 in either English or Maths.

Course overview

If you want to work in the construction industry and specialise in working with wood, then this is the course for you. You will learn the skills and techniques required for the carpentry and joinery trade.

The course is designed to support your practical skills development in line with industry practice while providing you with the knowledge element that is key to the understanding of Site Carpentry. You will also develop the attributes required for employment and the workplace to expand your career options throughout the course.


Course content

This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge required to perform site joinery activities in relation to 1st fix structural carcassing with flooring, roofing, frames, partitions and stairs. Develop skills and knowledge with 2nd fix joinery activities with skirting boards, architraves, hanging doors and handrails and balusters.

The course is structured with the following units:
Health and Safety
Principles of building construction
Carry out first fix flooring and roofing
Carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs
Carry out second fixing operations
Carry out carpentry maintenance
Set up and operate a circular saw

Throughout the study programme your work will be assessed in your understanding and practical skills development for a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade, within each unit of study when you have displayed the required knowledge and skills. Achieving this Diploma means that you have reached the standards expected by the industry.

Basic stationery for the classroom activities.

There are 5 points of PPE required in the workshop at all times. Each student is expected to provide their own safety boots and the department will provide the other 4 pieces:
Hi-viz vest
Hard hat
Eye safety

Construction Centre
Honeywell Lane

Apprenticeship in Site Carpentry (successful employer support required to take this option).
GCSE grade 4 in English and Maths to progress to a Level 3 T Level in Site Carpentry.

How much does the course cost?

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition.
