Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including GCSE English, plus a genuine enthusiasm for creating and producing content for a specific audience.

You will achieve

UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology.

Course overview

The Level 3 Sports Journalism course is an exciting stepping stone for aspiring sports journalists and commentators, in a world where sports coverage continues to captivate audiences. This course offers an opportunity to hone your skills in reporting, commentary and storytelling.

You will have the chance to gain hands-on knowledge and develop your broadcasting abilities with a strong focus on practical experience. Beyond the classroom, the course offers amazing progression opportunities such as careers in sports journalism, broadcasting and digital media platforms.

Course content

You will be involved in:

  • Live radio shows in our award-winning radio studio.
  • Live TV broadcasts using an industry-standard TV studio.
  • Promotional production.
  • Magazine production.
  • Contextual studies including exploring audiences.

The course will give you a comprehensive industry insight, exploring the roles and opportunities available in Sports Journalism.

 

You will be assessed on your practical work and coursework.

You will need an SD card, a memory stick and an external hard drive. All other equipment will be provided.

On successful completion, you can progress onto higher-level study in Sports Journalism, such as a degree. You could also undertake an Internship or Higher Apprenticeship in a Sports Journalism setting.

How much does the course cost?

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16 to 18 do not have to pay tuition fees. Students aged 19 or over may be eligible for free or reduced course fees.

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).

This can be added to your study programme.
