About the event
Once upon a time in a small village, there was a handsome Meerkat called Hans. He lived on Wigfield Farm with his best friends Neville the Goat, Heimlich the Pig and Jaffa the Guinea Pig…
You can come and see Hans and his friends at the farm throughout the summer and get involved with our fun daily activities.
You can also write your own story and enter our writing competition, with one lucky child winning a printed copy of their own book and a Wigfield Farm exclusive hamper!
Each week will have one of our Wigfield Farm friends as the centre of attention, with special activities focused on the animal in question! The programme is as follows:
- Week 1 (Monday 24 July – Friday 28 July): Meerkat Week
- Week 2 (Monday 31 July – Friday 4 August): Goat Week
- Week 3 (Monday 7 August – Friday 11 August): Pig Week
- Week 4 (Monday 14 August – Friday 18 August): Guinea Pig Week
As well as seeing all our friends on the farm, you can experience storytelling in the main café and opportunities to get to know our animals with live talks and animal feeds at the following times*:
11.30am: Story telling**
2.00pm: Animal talk/feed
The event will take place at our Wigfield Farm campus, Haverlands Lane, Worsbrough, Barnsley, S70 5NQ.
The admission price for the farm is £2 per person with free entry for children under the age of two. Free parking is available onsite for visitors, and our café will be serving refreshments and tasty treats the whole family can enjoy. However, you are welcome to bring your own refreshments with you and enjoy a picnic in the outdoor picnic areas whilst you are visiting.
Submit a short story as part of Wigfield Farm’s short story competition on the theme of ‘Once Upon a Time at the Farm’.

Whether you write about your ventures at the Farm or write about the adventures of the animals when no one is around, we want your creativity to flow. Make us cry or laugh with your stories and take us on a fun journey.
We are asking that you write a short story, which can include illustrations, and no more than 500 words on this theme as part of our writing competition. Entries are to be submitted from Monday 24 July and no later than Sunday 20 August 2023, 11:59pm with the winner announced on Friday 25 August.
The winner of the competition will see their book produced as an e-book and available to borrow from the Barnsley Libraries catalogue, as well as receiving a printed copy of their own

The competition is open to under 12’s only.
