Communication skills, client centred career interactions and career guidance…We have it all in our Information, Advice and Guidance courses!

Our Business and Management department offers a wide range of courses from Accountancy and Business Skills; to Occupational Health and Safety NEBOSH certificate and Leadership and Management qualifications.

In addition, the department also offers Level 3, 4 and 6 Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) qualifications. These work-based qualifications are applicable to any job role where you offer IAG to others and continued professional development (CPD). They are studied in the workplace or online, so have flexibility to be completed around your existing commitments which our students find to be really useful.

We caught up with some of our former students to tell us how the qualifications have helped them and what they are doing since they’ve completed their course.

“I studied the Level 6 Career Guidance and Development qualification at Barnsley College as a distance learning student, as my school is located in Leeds. It was a fantastic course to do and it taught me a lot in terms of techniques and theoretical knowledge which I could apply to my job as a Career Advisor in a high school.

“I also felt extremely supported by my tutor Allyson who made visits to my place of work and was available to contact via email every time I had a question. She guided me through each unit and was able to explain to me very clearly what I needed to do to be able to complete each module.

“I would highly recommend both the qualification and Barnsley College as a place to study just because of the care, time, patience and support that they provided to me during my time of study.”

Stuart Henderson

College course: Level 6 Career Guidance and Development Diploma (Work-based)

Now: Trainee Wellbeing Practitioner for Children and Young People, CAMHS Gateway

“The course allowed me to put theory into practice and to really get an understanding of why careers advisors conduct their practice the way they do. At work the knowledge gained through the qualification allowed me to take on a specialist role at work and gain valuable insight into careers practice and theory.

“The help and support I received was second to none, and as I am dyslexic, they gave me additional support which I found invaluable.

“I’d highly recommend studying this course and the College to anyone in a similar role. If the College offered an Level Careers Guidance and Development NVQ, then I wouldn’t hesitate to do this with Barnsley College.”

Millie Edwards

“Completing this qualification has really supported me within my role in the careers industry. Gaining this level of careers knowledge has helped me better my own practice when it comes to having 1:1 careers appointments with clients.

“Overall, this has positively impacted the way I deliver impartial Careers Information and Advice to clients.”
