Congratulations to our award winning apprentices in Shropshire

Karen Roberts with Shropshire Council Apprentice of The Year Award 2021

We were proud to sponsor the Apprentice of the Year Award at the Shropshire Council Virtual Apprenticeship Awards 2021.

The awards acknowledge the commitment and contribution of Shropshire Council apprentices, and the difference they make to the future success of the Council. They celebrate achievements across all key departments including HR, Adult Services and Property Services. The prestigious event was hosted online on Wednesday 10 February, during National Apprenticeship Week.

The winner of the Apprentice of The Year Award was Matthew Fleming, who is currently studying the Level 4 Data Analyst Apprenticeship Standard with Barnsley College. Tracey Bennett, also studying the Level 4 Data Analyst Apprenticeship Standard with Barnsley College, scooped the Director’s Choice Award.

Kate MacDonald, Upskill Programme Lead at Shropshire Council said: “We received some fantastic nominations for the Apprenticeship of the Year Award 2021 but Matthew’s certainly stood out; the hard work, passion and dedication Matthew has for his job and his apprenticeship is outstanding and we’re so pleased that we were able to honour this by presenting him with this prestigious award. The Shropshire Upskill Team is looking forward to working with Matthew in the coming year as an Apprentice Ambassador for the Local Authority.

“Since starting her apprenticeship, Tracy has honed her skills and has also delivered some fantastic transformation work for the local authority to improve service efficiency.”

Karen Roberts, Project Manager for Apprenticeships in Shropshire for Barnsley College, said: “We are proud to sponsor this award for the second year running. Several of our apprentices were nominated across three categories: Rising Star, Directors Choice and Apprentice of the Year. It’s great to see so many being recognised, not only by their Trainers but also by line managers and Directors.”

Barnsley College won the tender to be the preferred supplier for both Shropshire Council and Telford and Wrekin Council in June 2019. Since then, nearly 100 apprentices have been enrolled over a diverse and growing number of programmes ranging from Teaching Assistants to Data Analysts. The team recently welcomed two new Trainers to deliver programmes to their growing cohort of apprentices, and moved into a new training facility based on Shrewsbury Business Park.

Karen added: “Despite the COVID-19 pandemic we are seeing a sustained interest in apprenticeships that reflects both the significant value that apprentices deliver to businesses, and their contribution towards economic recovery.”
