Construction: Design and Build Technician Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship

This apprenticeship programme can be started at any time The typical duration for this Apprenticeship is three years but this will depend upon the previous experience of the apprentice and access to opportunities to gain the full range of competence.

Entry requirements

Individual employers will determine their own entry requirements, but the typical entry requirements for this Apprenticeship will be five GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths, English and a Science or a Level 2 Apprenticeship.

You will achieve

The following qualification will be gained:

  • A Level 4 qualification in Construction and Built Environment that meets the knowledge requirements of the standard and is approved by the industry’s recognised professional bodies meeting the educational requirements for Technician status or the equivalent level of membership.
  • English and Maths; apprentices without level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end-point assessment.

Course overview

The occupation covered by this standard is Construction Design and Build Technician and typical job titles can include Assistant Design Co-ordinator or Design and Build Co-ordinator. In the case of SME construction companies the roles are likely to include Design Co-ordinator or Design Manager. They are associated with the co-ordination of design information on construction projects and are based on construction sites with occasional time in offices.

The main duties and tasks of a Construction Design and Build Technician are;

  • Identification of client requirements in construction projects
  • Identification of health and safety risks in the design of projects
  • Checking of compliance with regulations on a construction project
  • The minimisation of the environmental impact of construction projects
  • Assisting architects with the development of detailed design on a construction project
  • Co-ordinate design information on a construction project
  • Monitoring of quality on a construction project
  • Assisting commercial staff with the monitoring of costs on a construction project

Course content

You will become competent in the following areas;

  • Understand the sustainability issues in projects across economic, social and environmental aspects
  • Understand different construction methods and materials and building regulations
  • Understand how to develop detailed designs in line with client requirements and construction process
  • Understand how to co-ordinate design information in both electronic and paper form
  • Understand construction contracts and client quality standards
  • Understand the importance of cost control on a construction project
  • Assist in the assessment and presentation of client requirements
  • Identify risk in designs and suggest actions to reduce risks
  • Assess, identify and record the environmental impact of projects
  • Assist in the implementation of the most appropriate solutions for construction projects whilst maintaining adherence to building regulations
  • Prepare and present design proposals and solutions
  • Control document production and design information
  • Inspect and report on quality standards and assist in commissioning of finished construction projects
  • Understand financial and legal constraints and measure and record progress against budget
  • Be able to work within own level of competence and know when to seek advice from others
  • Understand and apply the Code of Conduct and conduct regulations, ethics and professional standards relevant to industry’s recognised professional bodies
  • Identify own development needs and take action to meet those needs. Use own knowledge and expertise to help others when requested
  • Understand the importance of equality and diversity and demonstrate these attributes so as to meet the requirements of fairness at work
  • Be able to contribute effectively to meetings and present information in a variety of ways including oral and written
  • Be able to work with others in a collaborative and non-confrontational way
  • Be able to identify areas for improvement and suggest innovative solutions

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in college and in your place of work.

You will be required to provide paper, writing materials, A4 ring binder file, extra wide dividers and clear plastic wallets.

You will study within the workplace and attend classes delivered through T3 Training and Development.

This Apprenticeship will include the knowledge, skills and behaviours typically required to achieve Technician status or the equivalent with the industry’s recognised professional bodies. The final assessment process for this Apprenticeship will typically be representative of the review process required for professional registration

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.
