This apprenticeship programme can be started at any time. The duration of this apprenticeship is typically 18 months.

Entry requirements

Individual employers will set the selection criteria, but this might include five GCSE’s and/or A Levels, a Level 2 Apprenticeship, other relevant qualifications and experience, or an aptitude test with a focus on Functional Maths.

Course overview

Save the day and get serious with IT. Start your exciting career as a Cyber Security Technician with us.

The primary role of a Cyber Security Technician is to provide first line cyber security support. This requires individuals to monitor and detect potential security threats and escalate as necessary and to support secure and uninterrupted business operations of an organisation through the implementation of cyber security mechanisms and the application of cyber security procedures and controls.

An employee in this occupation will be responsible for supporting a cyber security function (frequently a Security Operations Centre or Network Operations Centre) working under supervision. The employee will be conducting specific cyber security tasks to defined procedures and standards. Specific cyber security mechanisms and controls that an individual would be required to implement would include patching software, installing software updates, implementing access control, configuring firewalls, security incident and event management tools (SIEM) tools and protection tools (Anti-virus, Anti-malware, Anti-spam).

Course content

The 18 occupation duties include:

  • Apply procedures and controls to maintain security and control of an organisation.
  • Contribute to the production and development of security culture across an organisation including assisting with the promotion of cyber security awareness programmes.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of cyber security awareness programmes.
  • Promoting an effective cyber security culture.
  • Process cyber security helpdesk requests ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability of digital information.
  • Meeting relevant legal and regulatory requirements for example access control requests.
  • Conduct the installation and maintenance of technical security controls in accordance with relevant procedures and standards.
  • Monitor, identify, report, and escalate information security incidents and events in accordance with relevant procedures and standards.
  • Administer cryptographic and certificate management activities in accordance with relevant procedures and standards.

On Programme Assessment will include a mixture of:

  • Practical demonstrations
  • Work-based projects
  • Written assessments
  • Portfolio
  • Observations
  • End point assessment

You will need to provide your own writing materials and a USB stick.

You will study within the workplace and attend classes at Barnsley College SciTech Centre, Falcon Street, Barnsley S70 2EY.

You can progress onto a Higher Level Degree and/or Apprenticeship study or apply for a vast array of Digital roles that include:

  • Access control administrator
  • Cyber security administrator
  • Incident response technician
  • Junior information security analyst
  • Junior penetration tester
  • Junior security analyst
  • Junior security operations centre (soc) analyst
  • Junior threat, and risk analyst

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
