Games Technologies Level 3

In Brief

Start Date / Duration

This course is planning to start w/c 20 January 2025. Lessons will be for 15 weeks, dates and times to be confirmed, term-time only.

Entry requirements

There is no requirement for you to have achieved any qualifications or units prior to undertaking this qualification, however a comprehensive standard of computer literacy skills are required due to the nature of the software  you will be using.

You must be aged 19 or above to study this course.

Gateway Level 3 Certificate in Games Technologies

Course overview

Building on knowledge acquired from the Level 2 Games Design and Development course, this is a comprehensive 15-week programme, delving deeper into essential key areas of Games Design.

The Games Design industry is worth billions of pounds every year, with gaming studios across the United Kingdom employing thousands of designers, programmers, artists and more. If you know your platformers from your RPGs and want to develop the skills needed to study further in this area, join our Games Technologies course and progress your career.

Course content

You will study the following units:

Project Management (Games Technologies): Level 3 unit – 6 credits

  • Understand the principles of project management and the methodologies used by organisations to manage games technology projects.
  • Be able to use project management software to plan a games technology project.
  • Be able to use project management software to monitor and review a games technology project.

3D Game Models: Level 3 unit – 6 credits

  • Be able to create 3D character models for a game.
  • Be able to create a 3D vehicle model for a game.

Concept Art and Digital Graphics for Games: Level 3 unit – 6 credits

  • Understand the types of digital graphics file formats used in games.
  • Be able to draw concept art for games.
  • Be able to digitise concept art into game graphics.
  • Be able to evaluate and refine digital game graphics.

Games Engines: Level 3 unit – 6 credits

  • Understand the types and purpose of game engines and their use in the games industry.
  • Be able to create a prototype game level using a 2D game engine.
  • Be able to create a prototype game level using a 3D game engine.

The Games Industry: Level 3 unit – 6 credits

  • Understand the games industry.
  • Understand the role of emerging technologies in gaming.
  • Understand regulation within the games industry.

You will be assessed using a range of methods such as practical tasks and written coursework within a portfolio of evidence. This portfolio will be used to determine your grade.

Learners can progress onto larger qualifications at the same level, including Access to HE, and then higher-level qualifications, including HNC/HNDs and even degree-level courses.

How much does the course cost?

This course costs £1645. This course is eligible for the Free Courses for Jobs funding which means you can study this for free if you meet the eligibility criteria. Please see the drop-down option below for more details. If you are not eligible for funding then you may be able to apply for an Advacned Learner Loan to cover the cost of the course.

If you are aged 19 or over, you may not have to pay for this course if:

  • You do not already have a level 3 qualification OR
  • You already have a level 3 qualification or higher but earn below £21,255 annually
  • You already have a level 3 qualification or higher but are unemployed and in receipt of a means-tested benefit.

This course is funded by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and/or West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA). You must be living in the South or West Yorkshire regions to qualify for funding.
