This course starts in September 2024 and is studied over two years as a part-time programme

Entry requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant subject or substantial professional experience
  • GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above or an equivalent qualification at Level 2 or above
  • Good information and communications (ICT) skills
  • You will need to undertake an interview with the Course Leader
  • You will be required to complete a satisfactory enhanced DBS check
  • You must be deemed fit to teach
  • You must secure an appropriate placement at a provider of post-compulsory education and/or training where you will undertake a minimum of 75 hours teaching hours in each academic year (totalling a minimum of 150 hours over the two year study programme).

You will achieve

You will gain a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (ProfGCE) in Post Compulsory Education. This qualification is validated by Leeds Trinity University.

Course overview

This course helps you develop the required skills, knowledge and professional values to be a highly effective teacher. You will have the option to work in Further Education colleges, sixth form colleges, adult and community learning, independent training providers and prison education. With a large proportion of your time spent on placement, you’ll gain the real-world experience that you need to prepare you for a fulfilling career in education.

Course content

You are expected to complete 120 credits across the programme and be observed teaching on eight occasions.

You will complete the following modules as part of the programme:

Year 1

  • Planning and Assessing Learning in the Post Compulsory Education Context
  • The Role of Theory and the Use of Evidence Informed Practice
  • Reflective Teaching Practice 1

Year 2

  • Exploring Contemporary Issues in Post Compulsory Education
  • Reflective Teaching Practice 2

As a part-time trainee, you would be committed to a Monday-to-Friday week of academic and professional study, consisting of on-campus study, professional practice placement (arranged by yourself and agreed with the College), as well as undertaking independent study and research.

Your assessment will be a combination of assignments, practical teaching experience, observation records and reflective practice. You will need to demonstrate that you have developed the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to be a successful teacher.

You will need to provide a pen, paper, notepad or electronic device suitable for completing assessment work (e.g. laptop).

Upon completion of the programme you can:

  • Secure employment as a qualified teacher in post-compulsory education
  • Apply for QTLS with the Education and Training Foundation
  • Consider starting a Master’s Degree in an education-related subject

How much does the course cost?

Course fees: £2,995 per year for those that enrol in September 2024.

We have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates.

We offer a service to any student who has a diagnosis of anything persistent or long-term which might interfere with how they study and manage their day-to-day academic engagement. The service is flexible and shaped around the needs of each individual; it might be consistent support or intermittent support.

As a Higher Education student living in England you may be eligible for the non-means tested Tuition Fee Loan from the Government and a Maintenance Loan.

Students with children or dependant adults may qualify for a Childcare Grant or Adult Dependants’ Grant. Students can apply for these at the same time as applying for a Maintenance Loan.

Remember: Eligible students will not have to pay tuition fees in advance and can apply for the Maintenance Loan before they start the course.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which can be added to your study programme.

If you’re aged 19 or above and don’t hold a a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
