Entry requirements

You need to be aged 16 or above. You will also need to hold four GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including Maths and English.

You will achieve

T Level Foundation Level 2 and Level 2 Certificate in Working with Children in Early Years and Primary Settings Certificate.

Course overview

This qualification is perfect if you want to kick-start your career working in the Childcare industry with early years and primary-level children. Completing this course will enable you understand more about the role of the Childcare Practitioner in both early years settings and primary schools and progress straight onto the Level 3 Education and Childcare T Level.

This course allows you to develop the basic knowledge, understanding and skills within the Childcare sector when caring for and supporting the learning and development of children aged 0 – 11 years and 11 months.

Course content

This qualification will provide you with an opportunity to develop a well-rounded understanding of the learning and development of children aged 0 – 11 years and 11 months, supporting progression to further education.

As part of this course, you will take part in a placement of at least 120 hours throughout the year. This placement will enable you to refine your teamwork skills, independence, confidence and improve your chances of gaining employment after college. You will also complete a mini employer set project to prepare you for your next steps onto the Education and Childcare T Level Level 3.

As part of this course, you will study the following units:

  • Child development (physical, cognitive, language, social and emotional) from birth to 11 years and 11 months
  • Play and learning
  • Cultural capital
  • The role of the Childcare Practitioner
  • Nutrition
  • Physical development and physical activity
  • Professional skills development

You will be assessed by your tutor and placement assessor using a range of methods. This will include direct observation of you on your placement, oral questioning, a portfolio of evidence, and written assignments or tasks as well as an exam and a mini project (ESP).

You will need to provide writing materials, stationery and a folder. Having access to a computer (computers can be accessed in College) would also be useful but it is not essential.

You will also need a current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate and willingness to travel to and from your placement.

You will also receive a pack when you enrol which includes two polo shirts for your placement and your DBS certificate. This pack costs approximately £66.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.
