Entry requirements

You need to be aged 16 or above. You will also need to hold four GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including Maths and English.

You will achieve

Level 2 Working with Children in Early Years and Primary Settings Certificate.

Course overview

This course is ideal for those who wish to understand more about the role of the childcare practitioner.

This qualification has been designed to support students as they develop their knowledge, understanding and skills when caring for and supporting the learning and development of children aged 0–11 years and 11 months.

Course content

You will take part in a placement of at least 120 hours throughout the year, which will help refine teamwork skills, independence, confidence and improve your chances of gaining employment. You will be assessed by the supervisor and centre assessor at the early years and primary school settings.

As part of this course, you will study the following units:

• Child development from birth to 11 years and 11 months
• The role of the Childcare Practitioner
• Play and learning and cultural capital
• Nutrition
• Exploring legislation
• Professional skills development
• Physical development and activity

You will be assessed by your tutor and placement assessor using a range of methods. This will include direct observation of you on your placement, oral questioning, a portfolio of evidence, and written assignments or tasks as well as an exam and a mini project (ESP).

You will need to provide writing materials, stationery and a folder. Having access to a computer (computers can be accessed in College) would also be useful but it is not essential.

You will also need a current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate and willingness to travel to and from your placement.

You will also receive a pack when you enrol which includes two polo shirts for your placement and your DBS certificate. This pack costs approximately £66.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
