As part of our recent ‘Carbon Literacy Week’ Engineering students took part in Carbon Literacy Action Day (CLAD)undertaking a Carbon Literacy course learning about the science behind climate change, how it is relevant to them and how they can act within their spheres of influence. This coincided with Education Day at the COP28 conference in Dubai.

Our new ‘Carbon Literate’ certified students have been recognised for their commitment to climate change and Carbon Literacy pledges which will embrace and influence sustainability within their subjects.

Sasha Beswick, Sustainability Officer at Barnsley College, commented: “This achievement by our Engineering students is a testament to the hard work of not only the students but their tutors who time and time again include transferable sustainability skills in the classroom.

“I would argue the students are already studying sustainable courses. Students are already learning how to repair vehicles to extend their lives and prevent them from entering the recycling plants, as well as learning how to maintain and repair electric and hybrid vehicles.

“Making that link to their subject and the wider world is what Carbon Literacy and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is all about.”
