Childcare: An Introduction to Caring for Children Level 1 Full-time

Start Date / Duration

This course starts in September and runs for one year.

Entry requirements

Three GCSEs at grade 2 or above including English and a positive school report.


A full qualification in a relevant subject at Entry Level and Level 1 functional skills in English and Maths.

  • You will also need to successfully pass a Disclosure Barring Service – (DBS).
  • You will require a positive reference from school and to be able to provide evidence of previous work experience in a related area.
  • You will normally take part in an interview prior to being enrolled on the programme.

If you don’t currently meet these entry requirements, you maybe able to study a Level 1 Foundation Learning course.

You will achieve

Level 1 in Child Development and Wellbeing (Barnsley College Qualification)

Course overview

This qualification is aimed at students who wish to develop an understanding of the job roles and settings within this sector.

You will develop knowledge and awareness of the skills required for progression within this area.

Course content

To achieve the qualification you will need to undertake:

  • Meetings or study with the course advisor, tutor or assessor
  • Personal study such as private reading and completing assessments
  • Time being assessed to undertake practical work or work experience

The core units are covered:

  • Sharing learning experiences with young children
  • Growth and development of young children
  • Healthy living

To achieve the unit you must provide evidence to meet all of the assessment criteria. CACHE Learner Achievement Log records your progress in achieving the assessment criteria and completing the units.

  • A current DBS enhanced disclosure certificate (currently £48.00)
  • CACHE core text book
  • A willingness to travel to your placements (this may on occasion involve two bus journeys)
  • Stationery
  • A College polo shirt for work placement

On completion of this programme, you could apply for further training on a Level 2 childcare course or an apprenticeship programme.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).

This can be added to your study programme.
